The unknown is the most universal source of fear because it can’t be controlled or understood. It’s been said that “there’s nothing to fear but fear itself”, then the unknown IS fear itself. Because the unknown can be any fear, all fears, your worst fear. When faced with the unknown, we feel unsure of what to expect or how to react, which can be unsettling.

Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.     -Marie Curie

Fear of the unknown equals uncertainty, which can induce fear because we can’t predict what will happen, leading to feelings of anxiety and vulnerability.

The unknown is frightening as it can bring up our deepest fears and insecurities. When faced with something that we do not understand or cannot control, it can be easy to imagine the worst-case scenario and to let our imaginations run wild.

What we can not see or hear can lead to feelings of fear and anxiety of the greatest of magnitude. Because we can’t confirm how bad an unknown element is, we instinctively conclude it’s the worst.

For most, fear is a natural, instinctive response to danger. But for covert operatives, fear is more complicated. While we’re trained to face physical danger, we’re also exposed to the unknown.

The unpredictable elements of a mission that can’t be planned for or controlled. This type of fear is unique and requires unique strategies to manage.

          The Psychology of Fear

Fear is an evolutionary trait that serves as a warning system in dangerous situations. It triggers physiological effects like increased heart rate, sweating, and adrenaline — all of which give you the energy and focus needed to escape danger.

However, when faced with an unknown element or situation, these physiological reactions don’t always help. Instead, they can make it harder to think clearly and stay focused – further heightening fear.

That’s why it’s important for covert operatives to have strategies for managing fear when faced with the unknown, uncertainty or unfamiliarity.

          Unknown Fear Coping Methods

Under different circumstances, the unknown is conversely viewed as a positive element where there’s something new and potentially exciting to discover. So you can shift your mindset by replacing fear of the unknown to curiosity of the unknown.

One way to cope with this type of fear is by developing a sense of control over one’s environment — not only physical but mental as well. For example, deep breathing exercises can slow down your heart rate and clear your mind so that you can think more clearly with composure in high-pressure situations.

Meditation can help you maintain focus while allowing your body time to relax and recover from anxiety-inducing stressors. Finally, visualization techniques can help prepare you mentally for things that may happen on a mission by helping you anticipate potential outcomes before they occur.

In addition to these tools, many operatives use cognitive reappraisal techniques such as reframing negative thoughts into positive ones or looking at an uncertain situation from different perspectives in order to gain insight into how best to approach it.

By repeatedly practicing these skills under pressure during training sessions, operatives are better equipped and prepared to take on uncertain situations with confidence when deployed in the field.

          The Uncertainty Principle

Fear is a natural emotion that can play an important role in our survival. It serves as an alarm system and can motivate us to take action when necessary.

But, the Uncertainty Principle holds that the more we focus on the source of our fear, the more it impairs our ability to think clearly and make sound decisions – amplified when it’s the fear of the unknown.

This means if we become too focused on the potential consequences of any situation, it takes away from our capacity to be as analytical and decisive in our responses. Unknown fear causes us to make decisions based on instinct rather than rationale and reason.
